Stellantis: Increased Orders For Affordable Electric Vehicles Are Enough To Achieve The EU’s Carbon Emission Targets Next Year

Stellantis expects that the company’s electric vehicle sales next year will be far higher than the “minimum level required to meet the EU’s stricter CO2 emission targets.” Stellantis Chief Financial Officer Doug Ostermann said that this confidence is based on market demand for the company’s new electric vehicles.

Doug Ostermann said at the Goldman Sachs Automotive Conference that orders for Stellantis’ new Citroen e-C3 pure electric small car (starting at 23,300 euros in Germany) and strong market demand for Peugeot 3008 and 5008 pure electric SUVs far exceeded the company’s compliance ratio, enough to achieve the EU’s 2025 carbon emission targets.

Next year, the EU will require automakers to reduce the average carbon dioxide emissions of cars sold from 115 grams per kilometer this year to 93.6 grams per kilometer.

Data calculated by Stellantis shows that by 2025, pure electric vehicles must account for 24% of all new cars sold by the company in the EU to meet the EU’s carbon emission regulations next year. However, data from market research firm DataForce shows that as of October this year, Stellantis’ electric vehicle sales accounted for 11% of the company’s total passenger car sales.

Currently, Stellantis is launching more affordable small electric vehicles on the flexible Smart Car platform, including the e-C3, Fiat Grande Panda and Opel/Vauxhall Frontera. These small electric vehicles start at less than 25,000 euros because they are equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that are cheaper to produce.

DataForce data shows that Stellantis has launched the first model on the Smart car platform, the e-C3, and this model is the second-best-selling pure electric small car in Europe in October, with sales of 2,029 units, second only to the Peugeot e-208.

Doug Ostermann said that Citroen will launch a smaller battery e-C3 model in the near future, priced at 20,000 euros.

Stellantis also launched models based on the STLA mid-size platform, such as the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs, and the Opel/Vauxhall Grandland SUV.

All models on Stellantis’ new platform are equipped with pure electric and hybrid systems, which allows the company to flexibly adjust its sales strategy according to demand. Stellantis believes that its new pure electric models based on the new multi-power platform can meet the EU’s CO2 reduction targets next year.
